The region (department) Alpes de Haute Provence, to the greatest degree, mirrors the distinctive character and the diversity of Provence. Mountains and plains, the Alpine meadows and downhill ski trails - it is possible to find here all of these. More than half a million hectares of territory in the region have been assigned the national park designation. Famous mountain national park Merkantur, for example, is one of the greatest in the Europe (over 200 000 h.) Alpes de Haute Provence is often the place, where spicy herbs for well-known French seasoning "Herbes de Provence" are being gathered. Alpes de Haute region have good facilities for skiing and other winter sports. Such popular centers of winter and mountain sports as Allos, Barcelonnette, Pra-Loup can be found here. There is a summer nudist camp by the small mountain town Castellane.
