The settlement on the ground the present capital of the french province Franche-Comte, town Besancon existed since time immemorial. Way back to the time of ancient Roman wars, Cesar’s soldiers had faced here a good organized defense. For centuries Besancon belonged to Austria (Holy Roman Empire), then to Spain, and only in the second half of 17th century had become the part of France. Shortly before the city had been captured by the French, there was constructed fortress La Citadelle by the projection of famous French military architect Vauban. For his fellow countryman, Vauban gave fortress' plan another brush, strong one. Construction had been resumed and expanded, and continued for another 30 years. Since that time La Citadelle, surrounded its subsidiary forts, acquired its true greatness. Nowadays, due to its well-preserved old town, Besancon is a remarkable place for tourist excursions.
