The Belfort ( "The territory de Belfort"), a department in the province of Franche-Comte, is a small area in size (610 square sm.), but one of the nice parts of France. It is where the national reserves "Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Reserve" and "Ballon d'Alsace Massif" lie on the terrains of Southern Vosges mountains, and almost the entire region can be seen as a remarkable panorama from a height of 1200 m. Here you have perfect conditions for hiking tourism, for a family winter holidays with mountain cross-country skiing, skating in plenty of rinks and walking trips to a beautiful and picturesque villages in the area. The capital of the region the town of Belfort is very lovely city and interesting to visit too: the old Fort, scenic houses, a special atmosphere, museums, exhibitions, festivals. The main monument in the city is the famous "lion" of eleven meters in the height, carved from the red sandstone in the rock in honor of the heroic arm resistance of french soldiers and locals during Prussian siege of 1870.
