Alsace is the only region of France where the tradition of making varietal wines only continues up to our days. As Christian Dior said, a small glass of Alsace wine is like a summer dress or a spring flower or a ray of sunshine that makes life brighter.
The term varietal describes wines made from a single named grape (grape variety). In biology variety means a rank of similar species, which have an appearance distinct from other ranks of species (other varieties).
Alsace grape varieties (and varietal wines or varietals) are: Sylvaner, Muscat grape, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Clevner de Heiligenstein, Auxerrois Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Pinot gris, Pinot noir.
